Mid-Century Modern:

2 Bathroom Remodel

Built in 1969, this especially unique, one-of-a-kind home was commissioned to be built by a very specific contractor to achieve a very specific look for the property owner. Over the past decade the home was being rented for a few years and in the process the renter unilaterally decided to demo and remodel 2 interconnected bathrooms during his stay in the home. The bad craftsmanship and incongruous style left the homeowners with the difficult choice of how to proceed with designing and restoring the bathrooms to a state that was new and beautiful while still fitting within the very unique style of the home.

The Challenge

The existing two (Guest and Jack & Jill) bathrooms were largely in a state of disrepair and had some unusual work done to them by a renter.

The unique style of the home meant that designing the new updated look would require careful thought and excellence in finishes to match that unique style. The Guest bathroom was oddly connected to the Jack & Jill bathroom so a plan was needed to reconfigure the layout. A wall-to-wall feature tiled niche had to be framed into an existing load bearing wall so structural planning was necessary.

A large chandelier was to be added to the Jack & Jill bathroom and the ceiling construction provided little access to run electrical. In the process of construction, dry rot and structural damage was discovered under the Jack & Jill tub as well as the Guest shower. A unique antique furniture piece was selected to serve as the vanity in the Guest bath but needed to be creatively modified to be used as a functional sink. The shower and vanity in the small Guest bath were both equally tiny and needed to be reconfigured to meet modern needs.

Our Solution

Working with the homeowner and a designer, we gutted and reconfigured the space to eliminate a door connecting the two bathrooms and enlarge the shower space in the Guest bathroom.

In the Jack & Jill bathroom a wall-to-wall niche was structurally prepped and executed to fulfill the sleek featured space. A deep soaker-style tub was installed according to homeowner specs and received a vintage brick style tile surround to match the unique style of the home. Adding a large linen/laundry cabinet helped to fill out an otherwise underutilized tub/toilet space. A Saltillo tile which picked up the style of tile elsewhere in the home replace the previous unsightly tile. The new vanity/powder station was installed in an understated design to feature the splash and mirror wall behind.

In the Hall/Guest bathroom the tiny shower and linen closet area were replaced with a full stand up shower with stylish herringbone floor tile along with a sleek linear drain system. The vanity was a special order antique, oriental-style furniture piece which was not originally designed to be used as a vanity. Creatively modifying and rebuilding the cabinet allowed for a contemporary infinity sink to be employed on top along with an oval, golden framed mirror to add dimension to the small bathroom space. The space was topped off with unique lighting to match the warm and contemporary feel of this mid-century modern home.
